The Lords Prayer PT.1

Matthew 6:7–8 (ESV)“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“The Lord’s Prayer is not merely the pattern prayer, it is the way Christians must pray.… The Lord’s Prayer is the quintessence of prayer.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Series Verses:

Matthew 6:9–13 (KJV) Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Our Father

1. Matthew 7:11 (ESV)If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Which art in heaven

1. 2 Chronicles 6:18 (ESV)“But will God indeed dwell with man on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built!
2. Psalm 11:4 (ESV)The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.
3. Psalm 14:2 (ESV)The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.
4. Psalm 73:25 (ESV)Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

Hallowed be thy name

1. Psalm 9:1–2 (ESV)I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. 2 I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
2. Psalm 22:25 (ESV)From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
3. Psalm 34:1 (ESV)I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
a. Maybe part of our problem is that we have so many other words exiting our mouth, rather than praise!
4. Psalm 67:3 (ESV)Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you!
5. Psalm 150:6 (ESV)Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Thy kingdom come.

1. Psalm 145:13 (ESV)Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words and kind in all his works.
2. Romans 14:17 (ESV)For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

1. Psalm 40:8 (ESV)I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
2. Psalm 143:10 (ESV)Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!
3. Matthew 7:21 (ESV)“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
