The Lords Prayer PT.3

Matthew 6:9–13 (KJV) – Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Forgive us our debts

AS we forgive our debtors

Matthew 6:14–15 (ESV)For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 5:7 (ESV)“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

James 2:13 (ESV)For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Matthew 18:32–35 (ESV)Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Lead us not into temptation

James 1:13 (ESV)Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.

Definition of  Temptation

(1) an enticement that has the goal of causing one to sin
(2) can refer to a test or trial of the validity of one’s faith

Should we be delivered from ALL temptation or just overpowering temptation?

James 1:2–3 (ESV)Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

Temptation is not so much the penalty of manhood as it is the glory of manhood. It is that by which a man is made an athlete of God.

William Barclay

Deliver us from evil

There is a dark, mysterious, spellbinding figure at work. Behind the temptations stand the tempter, behind the lie stands the liar, behind all the dead and bloodshed stands the “murderer from the beginning.”

Helmut Thielicke

Ephesians 2:1–2 (ESV)And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—

2 Corinthians 11:14 (ESV)And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

1 Chronicles 29:10 (ESV)Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever.

Revelation 5:13 (ESV)And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
